We’re a small family farm.  Both of us have “real” jobs in addition to our farming but it hasn’t always been that way.  We got married in August of 2000.  At that time we were milking 44 dairy cows on our place plus raising beef steers and replacement heifers.  We both knew that we wouldn’t be dairy farmers forever but we were still trying to find the alternative.  When the milk prices dropped in 2003 it made no sense to continue the work of milking cows and getting nothing in return.  That April we held an auction and we’ve never looked back.

Having a new baby and another soon to be on the way we enjoyed a little bit of freedom from milking while trying our hand for the first time at raising beef cows.  During that time Bill worked odd jobs for neighboring farmers and Kelly worked part time teaching jobs.

One day Bill got the idea that he was going to get a “real” job.  He had heard about an opening in the local railroad yard and gave it a shot.  He ended up getting the job and started as a conductor in 2005.  He now works as a Yard Master and although he would prefer to just work on the farm, we are both grateful for a well-paying job and good benefits.

Kelly also prefers working with her animals but works a “real” job as well.  She is employed by the county to work with farmers and other livestock owners to meet county and state regulations.  Although the job can get ugly at times, Kelly gets to apply much of her previous experience and passion to perpetuate local sustainable agriculture practices to teach old farmers new tricks.

We love our animals but our true pride and joy are our children, Jack and Lily.  They keep us on our toes but they are an amazing pair.  We’re proud to be raising them on the farm with exposure to all the ups and downs of life.  They play hard out here but they’re always willing to lend a helping hand with the chores.
